Health insurer Humana posts 19 percent gain in Medicare Advantage membership

Health insurer Humana Inc., one of the biggest players in the Medicare Advantage business, posted a 26 percent increase in first-quarter profit Monday.

Here's a breakdown of how the Louisville, Ky., company fared in its key segments.

Pretax income:

Government segment, $279.2 million, compared to $166.1 million a year ago.

Commercial segment, $137.8 million, compared to $127.7 million a year ago.

Enrollment:

Medicare Advantage, 1.74 million, up 19 percent from a year ago.

Stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plans, 1.9 million, compared to nearly 2.1 million a year ago.

Premiums and administrative service fees:

Medicare Advantage, $4.82 billion, up 19 percent from a year ago.

Commercial segment, $1.85 billion, down 2 percent from a year ago.

Premiums:

Stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plans, $579 million, down 3 percent from a year ago.
